Upgrading SCCM 1511 to SCCM 1602:
Start the upgrade process from the top site of the hierarchy
(CAS or Primary) and work through to the child sites (Primary or Secondary
sites), like any other previous configuration manager upgrades.
Unlike previous upgrades, we don’t have to download the Service
Packs or Cumulative Updates (CU’s) for Current Branch upgrades. We need to use
SCCM console to upgrade SCCM 1511 to 1602. We can see the update availability under \Administration\Overview\Cloud
Services\Updates and Servicing in SCCM console.
Before installing actual update, we should run the
prerequisite check.
Any errors need to be addressed then re-run the prerequisites check;
Review C:\ConfigMgrPrereq.log file for prerequisites check status update.
We can also see the status under \Monitoring\Overview\Site Servicing Status node;
Once the prerequisite check completed successfully, the console will update the status to Prerequisites check passed.
Now right click on Configuration Manager 1602 then select Install Update Pack;
On Configuration Manager 1602 General page, review the updates included in the update pack then click next;
On the Features window, select or deselect the features included in the update pack based on the requirements.
By default, all the available features will be selected.
Select desired Client update options.
If we want to test the client package before updating the
actual production package, then choose Validate in pre-production collection otherwise
select Upgrade without validating.
Remember, if we choose Upgrade without
validating, this will overwrite the existing client package
Accept the License Terms then click next;
Review the summary of the update then click next;
Close the wizard when it completed successfully.
We can view the status of the update package under site servicing status (\Monitoring\Overview\Site Servicing Status)
To see the full status update, select configuration Manager 1602 under Monitoring\Overview\Site Servicing then select Show status from the top ribbon;
The Show Status window will display the Update Pack Installation Status;
If we open the task manager, we can see cmupdate processor running during the update process;
Once the update is installed, if the console is still opened then you will be prompted
“A new version of the console is available
(5.0O.8355.100O). Click OK to
close the console and install the new version now. Click
Cancel to
continue working with the old console (5.0.8325.100O).
Working in the
old console might corrupt data.”
Close the console and let the package update the console.
The console will be automatically closed if we click OK,
then we will be prompted with UAC.
Click yes on UAC;
The Update package will start downloading the console update
package;
The installer will start installing the console automatically;
We can see the consolesetup.exe running in the task manager;
Once the console is updated, the console will open
automatically and version will show;
System Center Configuration Manager Version 1602
Console Version: 5.0.8355.1000
Site Version: 5.00.8325.1000
