How the site backup works
Configuration Manager backup task utilizes the Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS) to create the backup snapshot. The SMS Writer is a service that interacts with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) during the backup process. The SMS Writer service must be running for the Configuration Manager site back up to successfully complete
What can and cannot backed up:
The Backup Site Server maintenance task provides a backup snapshot for the site server files and site database, but there are other items not backed up that you must consider when you create your backup strategy
The following components gets backed up as part of Site backup;
- The Configuration Manager site database (SQL Server database)
- Configuration Manager Installation directory on the site server
- Master site control file (.\Inboxes\Sitectrl.box\Sitectrl.ct0)
- SMS and NAL registry keys on the site server
What not getting backed up:
- Site systems contain site data
- Logs stored other than Log folder
- Custom reports
Backup - Best Practices:
- Save the backup to a Non-OS and Non-config manager drive
- After first backup move the backup snapshot to a different location
- Use afterbackup.bat to archive the backup snapshots
